Where to Find Recent Domain Sales?

Whether you are a domain name Buyer or Seller, you should stay in touch with what is happening in the industry by checking the domain sales charts.   I wish there was one easy “master” list you could reference, but as always – it’s a bit more complicated. So where do you find reports of recent domain sales?

I’ll give you some of the key places to check for domain sales below, but first let me give you and idea of the “landscape”.  Like the real estate market, not all sales are publicly reported. Some of the large corporate domain sales are transacted but never reported because the Buyers request the sale be kept private (either due to the $ involved or for competitive reasons).

At the other end of the scale, alot of the smaller sales are not reported. For example, many domain sales under $1,000 are not reported, simply because there are too many of them, and people mostly want to see the larger sales. Also remember that errors can occur and numbers may not be 100% accurate. For example, some sales lists are compiled from sources that are hard to verify or only reflect sales ranges (ie. $5,000-$10,000).

Here are the top sources I watch for listings of recent domain name sales:

DNJournal.com – a well-respected and long-standing industry news source, DnJournal compiles a weekly list of top domain sales from around the web. Their list includes top .com sales as well as the best in .net, .org, and other country code domain name extensions (such as .ca, .de, etc).  They publish weekly and yearly lists of top domain sales. The DnJournal list is compiled from many sources and provides the best single source in my opinion (although it is not all-encompassing).

Sedo.com – Sedo is one of the larger domains marketplaces. Bloggers post Sedo’s weekly sales charts. I like to visit DomainShane.com to view a good list of Sedo recent sales along with his comments.

Afternic.com – Afternic is another large domain sales marketplace. They also publish a weekly list that is republished on blogs – see TheDomains.com

DomainNameSales.com – Frank Schilling, a respected industry professional, has built a domain sales platform that showcases recent sales enquiries, quotes and sales. It’s a helpful platform to learn about the market, the only downside being that many #’s are in ranges as opposed to exact figures.

Country specific lists also exist (see what I mean about it being a bit scattered).  For example, DomainReport.ca periodically blogs about .ca Canadian domain sales, and  4.cn targets the Chinese domain name market. If you search on Google for “domain sales” along with your specific domain country code, I’m sure you’ll discover these.

Lastly, I also see domain sales posted on Twitter. These are usually sales posted by individual domain investors.  (don’t forget to Follow me on twitter.com/domainassets)

There are lots of great resources out there to learn about the domain name market. Studying the sales lists to see what kind of domains are selling and at what prices will help you make better buying/selling decisions.
